Regulating Morality in a Void

A little commentary on some of the news in China.. .

President of China, Hu Jin Tao, just recently produced the "8 Do's and Don'ts" of a "Harmonuious Chinese Society." This is a latest addition to the government's aggressive policy to create strong ethical citizens alongside the country's amazing economic development.

There's not only a gap between the urban rich and rural poor these days (which the government is also seeking to fix in the next five years) but also a moral one. Having a lot of success and stuff doesn't fix the soul, in fact, it may make things worse. There's a big hole in the hearts of a billion or so people and maybe the effects are starting to take a noticable toll?

It's a good attempt, Mr. Hu.

But I don't think the human soul can change as easily or as fast as cityscapes and businesses...

That's all I think I'll say.

-------

8 Do's and Don'ts

· Love the motherland, do not harm it.
· Serve, don't disserve the people.
· Uphold science, don't be ignorant and unenlightened.
· Work hard, don't be lazy.
· Be united and help each other, don't benefit at the expense of others.
· Be honest, not profit-mongering.
· Be disciplined and law-abiding, not chaotic and lawless.
· Know plain living and hard struggle, do not wallow in luxuries.

-----

Yea, I hope it works.

But if it doesn't I'm sure something else will come up.. . right?
